English Idiom: It's raining cats and dogs

The meaning of this interesting idiom is “It’s raining very heavily”. It isn’t in any sense literal, i.e. it doesn't record an incident where cats and dogs fell from the sky.
It’s raining cats and dogs = Piove a catinelle , Piove a secchiate (nessun cane o gatto è coinvolto per fortuna, si tratta di un’espressione idiomatica).
