Il Boxing Day è una vera e propria festività del Regno Unito e di molti paesi cristiani appartenenti al Commonwealth.
Cade il 26 dicembre ed è il giorno in cui si regalano doni ai membri meno fortunati della società. In molti paesi coincide con importanti manifestazioni sportive o con l'inizio dei saldi.
Nei paesi scandinavi, il 26 dicembre i bambini vanno di casa in casa e ricevono piccole monete dai vicini.
L'etimologia di questa parola deriva dal sostantivo "box", scatola.

I Christmas cracker (cracker di Natale) sono gadget natalizi che fanno parte della tradizione natalizia del Regno Unito e dell'Irlanda. Sono però anche diffusi in alcuni paesi del Commonwealth come l'Australia.  Si tratta di piccoli tubi di cartone avvolti in carta colorata. Tirando le estremità, il cracker (che ha una forma simile a una caramella), emette un botto e si apre. Da qui il termine cracker che si riferisce a uno schiocco (to crack). All'interno si trovano piccole sorprese natalizie.

Una bella idea da importare sulle nostre tavole, dove si può portare un pò di inglese e avvicinare grandi e piccini a lingua e cultura anglofona.

Black Friday in the United States

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day and the Friday before Cyber Monday in the United States. It is a busy shopping day and is a holiday in some states.

A Day to Shop

Many people have a day off work or choose to take a day from their quota of annual leave on Black Friday. Some people use this to make trips to see family members or friends who live in other areas or to go on vacation. Others use it to start shopping for the Christmas season. Shopping for Christmas presents is also popular on Black Friday. Many stores have special offers and lower their prices on some goods, such as toys.

What's open or closed?
Black Friday is not a federal holiday, but is a public holiday in some states. Many people take a day of their annual leave on the day after Thanksgiving Day. Many organizations also close for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Public transit systems may run on their normal schedule or may have changes. Some stores extend their opening hours on Black Friday. There can also be congestion on roads to popular shopping destinations.
The other theory is that the term Black Friday comes from an old way of recording business accounts. Losses were recorded in red ink and profits in black ink. Many businesses, particularly small businesses, started making profits prior to Christmas. Many hoped to start showing a profit, marked in black ink, on the day after Thanksgiving Day.
